Brooklyn Fashion Week ‘08

Historically, Brooklyn has always been considered Manhattan’s little brother. Yet within the last few years, a serious case of sibling rivalry has raised the eyebrows of big bro – and the entire world.

The weekend of March 22nd was the fifth annual BK Fashion Weekend, which showcased the borough’s sweetest cream that has recently risen to the top.

Fashionistas from as far away as Paris, London and 40th Street had eagerly made their way across the bridge to get a look-see. The festivities took place at Northside Piers in the hopelessly-hipster nabe of Williamsburg.

Sponsored by the non-profit Brooklyn Style Foundation, which helps to market and guide local fashion designers, the event was h-to-the-t hawt.

Rick Davy, along with Cybele Sandy, head up the foundation and made the event happen.

“There is a need for the fashion industry to grow in Brooklyn,” Rick says, “with all the talent that we already have here over the years and the new talent that is moving in. I thought it was time to have some kind of engine to support the talent. That’s because the talent in Brooklyn is very different from the talent in Manhattan. It is more underground. It’s a little bit more edgy and risky and the designers are a little bit more independent. They’re a little bit more forward in their thinking.”

With Brooklyn faves such as Nico and Adrian, as well as Lenny York and Kencca Linton (originally from Jamaica), the event was without exception off the hook, and is leading the way for a Brooklyn fashion award show this summer.

Rick has some sage advice for young designers, both in Brooklyn and everywhere else where imagination is simmering. He says, “Get as much information as you can from one of the fashion institutes, like Parsons or FIT. The next level is to find an internship through one of the designers, and maybe create a collection and bring it to us and get an opportunity to show it on the Brooklyn Fashion Weekend.”

In other words, keep on keepin’ on. As The Beastie Boys once said, “No sleep ‘till Brooklyn.”
